Washer 5-step visual guide

Washer not draining?

Follow the water path before assuming the pump failed.

STEP 01

Power off.

Cancel. Unplug. Close water.

STEP 02

Trace water.

Cycle → load → visible hose.

STEP 03

Filter—if shown.

Only the owner-accessible part in your manual.

STEP 04

Test once.

Still full, humming, or leaking? Stop.

Model-aware safety, reasoning, and sourcesOpen exact notes

1. Make it safe

Electricity and water are a dangerous combination.

Cancel the cycle, disconnect power, and close the water valves before moving a hose or opening a user-serviceable filter. Use your exact model manual; filter access and emergency-drain steps vary.

If the tub is full, prepare a shallow pan and towels. Do not tilt a full machine. If the appliance is hard-wired, inaccessible, or leaking toward electrical connections, stop and call a qualified technician.

2. Follow the drain path

  1. Confirm the cycle state. A paused cycle, lid or door that did not latch, or a selected “rinse hold” type option can leave water behind. Follow the model manual’s cancel or drain-and-spin procedure.
  2. Reduce and rebalance the load. A tightly packed or badly unbalanced load can prevent a complete spin and leave clothes very wet, which can look like a drainage problem.
  3. Inspect the visible drain hose. Look for a kink, crushing, freezing, or an obvious blockage. Compare its height and insertion depth with the installation instructions for your model.
  4. Clean only an owner-accessible pump filter. Some front-load machines have one; others do not. Drain residual water exactly as the manual describes before loosening it.
  5. Run the manual’s drain test. If the machine hums without moving water, repeatedly stops, leaks, or shows the same code, record the sound and code for service rather than repeatedly cycling it.
Why model-specific instructions matter

Hose limits and filter locations differ. A generic measurement or panel-removal instruction can create a new leak or void a safe procedure.

3. Read what changed

Load or hose fixed itUse / installation
Filter debris fixed itMaintenance
Water still remainsDiagnosis needed

Continued standing water can involve the pump, wiring, control, pressure system, or an internal obstruction. The symptom alone cannot identify which one.

4. Price the real decision

A drainage symptom is not a replacement verdict.

Get the failed part, complete quote, and warranty—then place them on the decision map.
